Admirable Monster Collection 2012

Dysfunctional relations between identity and behaviour are portrayed in my collection of digital/organic hybrids, emphasising the 'struggle' facing the masked ‘monster’: the psychopath. A featureless abstract, the psychopath dons a series of guises masking their aggressively absent conscience and tendency towards destruction. The megalomaniacal psychopaths are often sensationalised as the mass murderer in films or the famous serial killer. Everyday psychopaths are dangerous too; 1% of the world's population have no conscience whatsoever - that's one in 100. Scary.

My work was motivated by the corporate monster and concealed identity, directing attention to the complex mass of fabrication. Lacking the manacles of integrity which (we think) bind the bulk of humanity, the psychopath is forced to imitate and mimic to 'function' in society. We all know the devastating effect of psychopaths who rise the ranks, ruining lives, destroying businesses yet applauded as successful with admirable traits.

The materials I use in my work echo the subject matter; the reflective surface of the vinyl prints characterise the incessant conflict between good and evil, in an individual deprived of remorse and a genuine moral compass. The red is pervasive, dominant, and masculine, but serving as a warning, a threat alert, to a character that could otherwise go undetected in a society that celebrates Machiavellianism.
